The Wadden Sea is an important stopover for birds along the East Atlantic Flyway. Millions of migratory birds use the North Sea’s coastal wetlands as a roosting and feeding area. Every year in autumn, they pass through the Wadden Sea on their journey from their Arctic breeding grounds to their wintering areas in West Africa. In spring, they return and restore their energy reserves.

Event series: Westküsten-Vogelkiek

The event series "Westküsten Vogelkiek" from 30 September to 8 October is organised by the National Park Wadden Sea Schleswig-Holstein.

Autumn is high season for migratory birds in the Wadden Sea. At this time, the birds are coming to the Wadden Sea in thousands. They rest on salt marshes and beaches during floods and search for food at low tide. If you want to experience this spectacle, the event series "Westküsten Vogelkiek" is just the right format.

7th Migratory Bird Day in the Lower Saxon Wadden Sea National Park (10 - 18 October 2015)

At nine days in autumn, it is all about migratory birds along the Lower Saxon North Sea coast and on the East Frisian Islands. Godwits, Dunlins and other waders come from the far north and feed here for the onward flight to their winter quarters in Southern Europe and Africa; many northern geese spend the whole winter on the coast.
