Dune restoration, climate adaptation, and nature experiences – The Sandküste project

St. Peter-Ording is one of the few places along the German mainland coast of the Wadden Sea where a stretch of the coastline is protected by dunes instead of a dike. The area is characterized by a unique coastal landscape with a wide, sandy beach, dunes and adjoining forests. The “Sandküste (engl. Sandy Coast) St. Peter-Ording” project aims to enhance the natural character of this landscape and thereby strengthen the biodiversity and resilience along the coast. At the same time, it contributes to climate adaptation by researching the development of dunes and beaches as sea levels rise, while enhancing the experience of nature through practical nature conservation activities and guided tours. A special feature of the project is interdisciplinary cooperation, bringing together two environmental associations, two universities and a private landowner. In recognition of its innovative and integrative approach, the Sandküste was selected as a winning project in the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration initiative in the “Seas and Coasts” category.
