Life Dunes. Report on six years of dune restoration in the Netherlands.

Project report. The Netherlands has major, international responsibility when it comes to preserving the dunes. The country is a stepping stone in the coastal dune zone that runs from northern Denmark to northern France. A dune restoration project was also carried out in Denmark using LIFE Nature’s support. Furthermore, the LIFE Dunes project on the Waddeneilanden [Wadden Islands] also contributed to the preservation of the entire Waddengebied [Wadden Sea area], which was pronounced a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009. Throughout Europe people are cooperating to preserve the unique nature of the dunes. Staatsbosbeheer carried out the LIFE Dunes project together with its partners. The Waddenvereniging and Stichting Duinbehoud provided substantive advice and collaborated on the publicity surrounding the LIFE Dunes project. Wetterskip Fryslân helped Staatsbosbeheer restore the natural soil hydrology on the island of Terschelling.
